Holly

“Why do you chop like that?” asked Tara.

“Like what?” Holly asked. They were meant to be starting another take but Tara had interrupted again. Holly wasn’t sure if they were making good progress or not, but it was nearly midday and despite being surrounded by food, she didn’t think she’d be eating anything soon. The morning had gotten off to a slow start when her cauliflower and parmesan fritters had looked brown and not remotely photogenic. It had taken three attempts to fry a good-looking fritter, but even then, Danielle hadn’t been happy with how the dish looked. Holly was learning that the shot of the finished dish was just about the most important part of the show and Tara’s main job was to copy the recipe to make a good-looking dish if Holly’s failed. Four hours later Holly wished she’d grabbed some of those fritters before they were whisked away to the bin. They may not have looked pretty but she was sure they’d have tasted great.

“Chefs usually chop faster,” Tara said.

“I’m not a chef.” Holly felt the skin on her chest prickle but she kept on chopping in her usual way. She was fast enough.

“You’re not?”

“No, I’m a cook, but I’m a trained—” Educator, nutritionist, home economist…

“But they’re promoting you as a celebrity chef.”

“Not really. Besides, I don’t think the average viewer pays much attention to—”

“Yes they are. A celebrity chef with an attractive fiancé and everything.”

Holly tried to ignore the last remark and concentrated on not chopping herself. She didn’t want band-aid-covered fingers for her big debut.

“I suppose you’re going to have a big wedding,” Tara continued.

“We aren’t planning anything yet.” Holly looked at Tara. They were about the same age and Tara seemed to love cooking and food. They should have a lot in common, yet Tara didn’t seem to like her at all. Filming certainly wasn’t fun, but not necessarily worse than getting heckled by fourteen-year-olds. And by the end of next week filming would be done and she wouldn’t have to worry about Tara anymore.

But Holly wished Tara would stop going on about Charlie. She wished everyone would stop going on about Charlie. She had a cooking show! She was going to be on television! And all anyone wanted to know about was Charlie.

Including Saskia. Holly was trying not to worry too much about what Saskia had said at the party, though how Saskia had managed to turn the kiss at the speeches back to her parents and her own grief, Holly wasn’t sure.

It wasn’t an unpleasant kiss. Far from it. Charlie had held her firmly, like he meant it. But there were a couple of hundred people watching them, so she hardly would have called the kiss intimate. And she was so focused on making the kiss look convincing to the audience that she didn’t have time to feel anything.

But apart from the fritters and Tara, she was starting to find her groove. She was making her leek and blue cheese tart and spoke to the camera.
